The regime in Pyongyang has accused the US of a "hostile provocation" because of their criticism of the UN Security Council on the North Korean missile tests. "The US has done something stupid with this meeting, which will come back to them like a boomerang," said the Foreign Ministry in Pyongyang.
The meeting helped North Korea "to make a final decision on the path to choose," a spokesman for the ministry was quoted by the state media. How the way will look exactly, he left open.
The spokesman reiterated hopes that the faltering negotiations on the North Korean nuclear weapons program could soon be resumed. The US would talk about a dialogue, "but it is obvious that the US can not present anything before us, although a dialogue can be opened."
US calls missile testing "deeply counterproductive"
The US offered negotiations on Wednesday (local time) North Korea. At the same time they put Pyongyang under pressure. "We are prepared to be flexible, but we can not solve this problem on our own," US Ambassador Kelly Craft told a session of the UN Security Council in New York. Pyongyang must also move in this process. The ongoing missile testing of North Korea called Craft "profoundly counterproductive." The country risks closing the door to peace negotiations.
Since the failed summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korea's ruler Kim Jong Un in Vietnam in February, nuclear talks have not progressed. Pyongyang had threatened a "new path" if the US did not submit new proposals by the end of the year.
In South Korea, it is feared that the sealed-off neighboring country could abolish its self-imposed test ban on atomic bombs and long-range missiles in the near future.
