Rivlin after the Knesset dissipation: Democracy must not be lost

Edit: Joy Fellow

Following the dissolution of the Knesset, President Reuben Rivlin urged the public not to lose confidence in democracy. "We should not sink into this useless despair or tragedy," the president said. "We must not lose confidence in the democratic method and our ability to shape the reality of our lives in our own hands in its own right."

Rivlin expressed hope that the election campaign, the third in a year's time, would be the last, and at the end a government would be formed. He said, "Praying that the depth of the current political crisis will lead us as a society and a country to fight not only for our right to share one another - but also for our duty to find what to agree on."

The 22nd Knesset was dispersed tonight after no Knesset member was able to obtain 61 signatures to form a government. The special committee in the Knesset approved the two bills for dissemination, after which they were approved by a second and third reading of the plenary by a majority of 94 MKs and without opponents or abstentions.

The legal adviser to the regular committee made it clear that although the bill was approved after midnight, the elections would be premeditated and not held on Purim, which is the original date, provided President Rivlin did not inform the Knesset Speaker that neither of the MKs was able to form a government.
