Liberty is a brown and mature sea turtle trapped in a fishing net in Jasser a-Zarqa in April this year. She reached the rescue center when she was weak, covered with parasites and with her anterior right limb amputated. After a more extensive examination, including a CT scan at Dr. Zahi Eisenberg's clinic, it was found that she suffered a minor head injury and injury to both lungs. She was treated with antibiotics and fluids, and cleared of all parasites remained in intensive care. Thereafter, Freedom was transferred to the treatment yard for continued supervision and treatment. After about nine months of strengthening and healing, it was decided that she was fit to return to the sea.
Aya, too, is a brown sea turtle and mature, and was found in October this year by a guide at Kibbutz Sdot Yam's sailing club as she floated on the water. Aya was taken out of the sea and brought to the rescue center when she was breathing heavily, which could indicate the possibility of drowning. After a more extensive examination, which included a CT scan at the vet's clinic, Dr. Eisenberg, it became clear that there were no further findings. Aya was in intensive care and treated with antibiotics and fluids. She is qualified to return to the sea.
The amount of time that turtles can pass without breathing varies depending on their activity level, water temperature, depth at which they are and other factors. When a turtle is caught in a net or fishing line, its stress level increases and so does its metabolic activity. As a result, the turtle's oxygen consumption increases and it needs to breathe more frequently. However, in clinical trials, it was discovered that the turtle brain can return to normal activity even after a two-hour break without oxygen.

Trapping in the various fishing methods can take many hours, and if the turtle can't get up before the water it can draw water. In severe cases, the drowning is immediate and without initial treatment during the hours adjacent to the drowning event, the turtle will not survive. In other cases, the health deterioration following the drowning is slower and takes several hours, so the turtle can be brought to the rescue center and given medical treatment before it stops breathing completely. In addition, drowning trauma and the presence of healthy water can subsequently cause edema and inflammation, so supportive antibiotic therapy is usually required for a period of two weeks or more.
The Nature and Parks Authority emphasized that if a wounded animal is found, call the Nature and Parks Authority hotline 3639 * If you find an injured turtle, do not attempt to return it to the sea but call the hotline or the Authority's Sea Turtle Rescue Center.
