The U.S. Senate unanimously (Thursday) decided on the recognition of the killing, which took place about a century ago, of more than one million Armenians as a genocide. In contrast, in the Republican-controlled Senate, the decision on the issue has been blocked several times in the past. The move could provoke Turks' rage and sabotage Washington-Ankara relations.

The Armenians claim that up to a million and a half people were murdered in the First World War by soldiers of the Ottoman Empire. While Turkey recognizes that many Armenians living in the territories of the Ottoman Empire were killed in battles with Ottoman forces during World War I, it denies that it was a systematic killing that constituted genocide.

Turkey has previously claimed that the death toll was much smaller, reaching about 300,000, but according to the International Association for Genocide Experts (IAGS), the number was over one million.

Last October, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives voted 405 for the resolution, against 11 who opposed it, stating that the perpetuation of the Armenian genocide by the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1923 is a formal policy. Following the decision, Turkish Ambassador to the United States, David Starfield, was summoned for a reprimand at the Foreign Office in Ankara. Turkey's foreign minister, Mabut Chabushaolo, also denounced the decision made at the time, calling it a "disgraceful decision".

For years, Turkey has firmly denied the allegations that it is responsible for the massacre. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan first expressed his condolences to the massacre in 2014, but it was merely a symbolic act that did not satisfy the Armenians. Erdogan even reiterated in the past that historians should investigate the killings on the basis of documents and archives and not on a political basis.
