Is there a first tangible agreement in the trade dispute between the US and China? According to media reports, US President Donald Trump is now actually ready to give his blessing to a so-called one-to-one agreement with China . This agreement has been negotiated by negotiators from both sides in recent weeks. It will cover the topics of intellectual property protection, financial services, currency issues and agricultural products. Further disputes between the two largest economies in the world would then be dealt with in the coming year.

In the stock markets, the news of the possible partial agreement reinforced the already positive sentiment. If Trump does not change his mind at the last minute, he could officially introduce the agreement today. Among other things, China is said to have agreed to buy more American agricultural products . In addition, the intellectual property of US companies in China should be better protected. In return, Trump wants to take back some punitive tariffs on Chinese products in return, also scheduled new tariffs for the time being probably will not enter into force.

A triumph for Boris Johnson

Vickie Flores / EPA-EFE / REX

He really made it : As things stand, Boris Johnson will clearly win the general election in the UK . The PM and his Conservatives are projected to have about 368 seats in parliament, while the opposition Labor party has a historically bad record, reaching only 191 seats. This is a true triumph for Johnson - and a shameful defeat for his challenger Jeremy Corbyn, who is unlikely to be a party leader. He has run the worst result for his party since 1935 and will probably respond accordingly.

Initial analysis: Many Britons are obviously tired of the eternal cheating on Brexit . With the choice of Johnson they have decided for clarity . The PM now has a clear majority in the House of Commons, with which he can enforce the EU exit on January 31, 2020.

Johnson had another advantage in the election campaign: Although he is politically quite a chaot and even as Foreign Minister was a miscarriage, many voters Jeremy Corbyn as a type probably worse . Even his old-left messages of re-privatization and redistribution according to the watering-can principle were obviously not very well received by many voters. For many a party beyond the British Isles this should be a warning. Yes, dear SPD , you are meant.

A lot of hot air at the climate summit

IFEMA / DPA

The World Climate Summit of the United Nations is coming to an end today in Madrid . Better said, that's the plan. It may well be that the Mammoth Meeting lasts until the weekend, sometimes it takes a little longer at these conferences, until all have agreed on any minimum compromise on climate protection , to which then again many states do not comply.

Unfortunately, these meetings with many thousands of participants generate plenty of hot air (and CO2). Hosts of ministers arrive, officials, advisers, press officers, UN officials and so on. There is more talk than decided. Over the past 25 years, a veritable global climate protection scene has evolved, for members of which these meetings are also something of a happy meet-and-greet , in which tidy expenses are spent.

That does not mean that such summits are superfluous. Multilateral action remains important, but at the end of the day it is above all crucial that every country actually undertakes in concrete terms. Therefore, is not it at the climatic peaks not finally a size smaller?

Loser of the day ...

Michael Kappeler / DPA

... is Foreign Minister Heiko Maas . Since the decision of the US House of Representatives for sanctions against the Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 2, the German chief diplomat rumbles loudly and strikingly against the Americans. "European energy policy is decided in Europe, not in the US," he said. He also called on the US Senate not to approve the sanctions. The Minister's Problem: If the Nord Stream sanctions now come into force, it is also a heavy defeat for him personally and for his diplomats. For the Foreign Office, it was then despite massive lobby efforts in Washington failed to turn things around. Of course Maas prefers not so loud.
