The murder of a female student by a schoolboy shocks New York

An 18-year-old New York student was murdered during an armed robbery while walking in a park near the college where she studied. The arrest of a 13-year-old boy on suspicion of murder, and the possible involvement of other minors, is shaking the city.
Tessa Majors was a freshman at Bernard College, when last Wednesday she was attacked in the evening near Morningside Park. According to police, who responded to a 911 emergency call, the girl was found unconscious, suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was evacuated to Mount Sinai Hospital, where her death was determined.

New York Police Department Detective Rodney Harrison said last Thursday that Majors had been attacked by one to three people as she walked through the park. He said the attack happened around 7 p.m. A security guard who saw her staggering down the stairs leading to the park called police, and a knife was found in the ring, though it is unclear to whom it belongs.

The murdered boy appeared last Friday in court, but his lawyer, Hannah Kaplan, declined to comment. According to the New York Times, the boy testified to police that he went with his two friends to the park to rob people. He claimed his two friends dragged Majors, strangled her and stole the contents of her pockets, before seeing one of them stab her. He said everyone had fled the scene, but so far the police have investigated another suspect, 14, and has not yet reached the third suspect.

According to the Associated Press, the 13-year-old lawyer said police had no further evidence other than his statement. "There is no allegation that my client touched her," she said. "He was only present when it happened." The boy, who is being held in a juvenile detention facility, and his friends attended a school near the park. He will appear in court again on Tuesday.

The majors were about to finish their first semester at Private Brender College for Girls, which she joined after graduating from high school in her hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia. She was a member of a local band called Patient 0, which recently released an album.

"We lost a very special young woman, very talented and very loved," her family said in a statement. "Tess has illuminated this world, and our hearts will never be the same." Her father, Inman, is an English professor at the University of Madison and author of six books. The family wanted to thank everyone who supported it and the New York Police Department.

On Thursday, a memorial rally was attended by thousands of students, faculty, alumni and other members of the community. The college's president, Sian Leia Baylock, said of Majors' love of music and her enthusiasm for school. She added that the girl worked in congressional political campaigns.

"In the coming months, we pay tribute to Tess and mark her life. For now, I urge you to keep Tess and her family in your thoughts and hearts. Support each other, lean on each other and take care of yourself," she said. "What makes Bernard such a special place is his devout community. Our students come from different places, and they still come together to support each other when needed. The faculty and the college are no different. In the coming days and weeks, we need each other. We need to support each other and remember You're flying. "
