(CNN) - The following article contains spoilers about the final season episode of "Watchmen," "See How They Fly."

The end of "Watchmen" ended unfinished and yet it felt like the perfect place to close this version in short. Actually, that is a tribute to what producer Damon Lindelof and his team accomplished, brilliantly superimposing a new dense mythology on the existing basis, and joining their various threads in the last three episodes.

Of course, reaching such a reward required to endure a lot of confusion during the first half dozen deliveries - especially for those unfamiliar with the source material - with Lindelof having mastered the art of slow construction in "Lost" and "The Leftovers ”, Series where the end stayed far from the rest of the way.

Regina King

On the contrary, “Watchmen” delivered a largely satisfactory ending, intertwining strands and solving most (not all) of the loose ends, while leaving some tempting possibilities to reflect once the credits appeared.

Above all, the last three episodes witnessed the return, the backstory and finally the death of Dr. Manhattan (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), the naked blue superhero with virtually unlimited power to manipulate time and space. Although the series operates in a world of disguised justices, Dr. Manhattan offered the main link to a true alternative superhero reality that served as the backbone of the historical graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

The episode also revealed the lineage of Lady Trieu (Hong Chau), who turned out to be the biological daughter of Adrian Veidt (Jeremy Irons), who finally escaped her purgatory on a Jupiter moon where Dr. Manhattan had exiled him, using her status of the smartest man in the world to save the day. In essence, Veidt, also known as Ozymandias, did penance for his original sin, saving the world by killing millions. This time, the solution included a frozen hail of interdimensional squid.

Just writing that previous paragraph underlines the great task involved in bringing “Watchmen” to the screen, as Zack Snyder discovered when directing the 2009 film. Lindelof's challenge was possibly even more formidable: to bring the story to the present day, keep ties with your main characters and establish a set of new characters.

As an additional benefit, the series offered a provocative exploration of the racist past and present of the United States, when the white supremacy group that sought to harness the power of Dr. Manhattan ended up being the target of his bloody revenge. He also closed the circle regarding the odyssey of Angela Abar (Regina King), whose final legacy, as a potential heiress of Dr. Manhattan's extraordinary abilities, was literally hanging.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

As mentioned before, Lindelof (who co-wrote the ending with Nick Cuse) did not close everything with a flourish, but the program eradicated the main threats, using a particularly appropriate song from “Oklahoma!” To conclude the series, whose intergalactic locations include Tulsa

The feeling of closure was enough to make it feel that "Watchmen" could end there without a problem, and be a true limited series, after Lindelof said from the beginning that he wanted to tell an independent story, without committing to go beyond that.

Of course, since the cult devotion that the project has generated among fans, willing to bet on subscriptions, represents the holy grail of the era of streaming television, a continuation is likely necessary.

Those considerations aside, everyone involved should receive applause for presenting one of the most impressive recent series based on such a well-established material: not a new version, restart or reinvention, but a genuine extension that overcame a degree of difficulty excessively high

"Watchmen" can be described in many ways, but viewed through a lens strictly from a creative perspective, it is a reminder that heroes do not always wear capes.
