The federal government's new climate package is well received in the Union faction: the CDU and CSU faction voted in favor of the federal-state compromise with a large majority. According to participants, only 18 of 246 members voted against the compromise. However, the group meeting also made critical comments, particularly in connection with the possible neglect of rural areas.
It should be pointed out that, for example, citizens who rely on the car to care for their relatives in nursing homes do not benefit from the commuter package. Politicians have to make sure that climate policy does not lead to a split between city and country in the long term.
Representatives of the federal and state governments had agreed on a basic compromise in the conflict over the federal government's climate package. It stipulates that the CO2 price will start on January 1, 2021 at EUR 25 per tonne - previously an entry price of EUR 10 was planned. By 2025, it is expected to gradually increase to 55 euros.
In return, there should be a further increase in the commuter allowance for longer journeys and relief on the electricity price. The reduction in VAT on the railways is now planned to take effect in early 2020.
The mediation committee of the Federal Council and the Bundestag is expected to agree on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Bundestag should approve the compromise, and on Friday the state chamber.
