MeToo has reached Arab society

While Jewish society in Israel is engrossed in the riots of politics, primaries and third elections, Arab society is furious following a wave of protests against the phenomenon of sexual harassment. Arab women's organizations operating in Haifa and the north are running campaigns, especially on social networks, against prominent leaders and figures in Arab society, in the spirit of the global MeToo movement. A great deal is going on on Facebook, and you have to admit that there are quite a few personal account killings in comments and shares as well.

You can read testimonies and stories that are presented anonymously by the victims, who describe difficult experiences of harassment and assault, some years ago, by powerful men, influential positions or leaders in public bodies and the political system. The names of those marked as attackers or harassers are revealed: when they respond, the level of flames rises and the storm around them increases, and when they keep silent it is interpreted as confession and labels them as guilty and sex offenders.

The fruits of such a campaign are well known. As in the world - including in the Arab world - even in Arab society in Israel, a movement based on the power of networks and public opinion discourages potential harassers and causes men in positions of power to internalize proper behavioral norms toward co-workers or subordinates. Also, such a campaign can give women the courage to report, speak and tell.

This is the first campaign made in this way in Arab society in Israel, with the full identifying details of each "suspect", but it can also be dangerous. Ultimately, the content that was uploaded before law and enforcement agencies were reported and checked remains in the networks and search engines, and the good name of the innocent may have been tarnished. Following the campaign, graffiti addresses with "suspicious" names were sprayed on city streets and public places, and some men referred to the charges against them - but their reactions seemed to disappear in the riot of stories and rumors of their actions.

However, the campaign seems to have addressed the difficult problem of many women's unwillingness to complain to the police against harassers, as they feel they will not receive backing from the environment or the police. Advertising and revealing the names put pressure on the men to publish their version, deny, clarify or admit and apologize. This was the case a week ago with one of the top figures in Arab politics in Israel, a party leader, a senior scholar and a former Knesset member.

The names of the women who shared their experiences, as mentioned, remain confidential, reserved in the organizations leading the campaign. This is certainly intended to protect the women who have been exposed to sexual harassment, but once it has been made public, there is no escape from filing a complaint with the police. This is not only the case that justice should be done with the victims, but also that refraining from filing a complaint undermines the credibility of the testimony and strengthens the credibility of the "suspect."

Either way, the MeToo movement has reached Arab society in Israel, and its very existence is an important source of empowerment for Arab women in both private and public space.
