(CNN Spanish) - Mexico raised the minimum wage by 20% nationally and 5% in the North Border Free Zone (ZLFN) this week, following an agreement between the Government, the workers' centrals and the employers.
Thus, from January 1, 2020, the national minimum wage will go from 102.69 pesos (about $ 5.4) to 123.22 pesos ($ 6.5) per day, that is, 3,746 pesos (about $ 198 ) a month.
This year other countries have increased their minimum wages, such as Venezuela where it increased again in October, as announced by the Government, and remained at 300,000 bolivars a month, about 16 dollars. That was the third salary increase in 2019 amid monstrous inflation.
After weeks of protests, in October the president of Chile Sebastián Piñera signed a bill that seeks to ensure a minimum guaranteed income of $ 490, although this did not calm the demonstrations.
Venezuela has the lowest minimum wage in the region, and by far: the next lowest on the list is that of Nicaragua (for the agricultural sector): $ 129 per month.
On the other side of the spectrum is Chile with one of the highest minimum wages in the region, followed by Uruguay ($ 416) and Ecuador ($ 394).
