A fatal traffic accident on KMB on Fanling Highway caused six deaths and 39 injuries. At 2 pm today (19th), relatives of the deceased, accompanied by police and SWD staff, went to the Kwai Chung mortuary to identify the dead body with a solemn expression. At the scene of the accident, police criminal detectives and government chemists will be present to investigate, including understanding the situation of the trees that were hit. Police said yesterday that the driver who passed the alcohol breath test will conduct an investigation based on the driver's physical condition, driving attitude, road conditions, and the performance of KMB's components. A cross-departmental analysis of the accident will be conducted to investigate whether anyone is liable for criminal responsibility. Received reports of traffic conditions affected by trees or branches at the scene. It is understood that criminal detectives will also go to the Tai Lam Vehicle Detention Centre to inspect the bus involved.

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Law Chi-kwong, said that he was deeply saddened by the death of a secondary worker in a severe traffic accident on the Fanling Highway in the Fanling Probation and Social Service Order Office of the Social Welfare Department. On behalf of the Bureau and his colleagues in SWD, he expressed his deep condolences to the family member of the SWD colleague, and the department will try his best to provide appropriate assistance to his family. Law Chi-kwong also expressed his deep condolences to the families and other injured persons of the remaining five deceased in the accident. He also pointed out that SWD would provide appropriate assistance for their welfare needs.

The SWD has provided a full-time social worker to each family member of the dead and injured, providing them with psychological counselling, emotional support, and financial assistance, including the necessary funeral services. SWD will also co-ordinate donations from different charities for victims of traffic accidents. If the public is emotionally troubled by this accident, they can call the SWD's 24-hour hotline (2343 2255), and the SWD will provide emotional counselling and support to the public in need.

At 4:00 pm on December 18, a KMB Route 978 carrying more than 50 people drove along the Fanling Highway towards Sheung Shui, across Songpai, and suddenly crashed into a collision barrier and then hit a tree. A tree branch "opened" and one man and one woman threw out the carriage and died. The other two men and two women fell down on the upper floor and the stairs. A temporary morgue was set up at the scene. The youngest wounded were only 3 years old, 39 people were injured, 28 ambulances arrived and rescued the injured to 4 hospitals. The 56-year-old captain was arrested for driving dangerously and causing death.
