(CNN Spanish) - This Thursday, the Senate in Chile approved the project that enables a new constitutional reform, setting April 26, 2020 as a date for a referendum where citizens will be asked if they want a new Constitution or not.

The instance occurs after two months of social protests in the southern country, where protesters demand the government to end inequality, better wages, decent pensions, more access to education and health, among others.

In November, most Chilean politicians agreed to change the current Constitution, passed in 1980 under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. If a new magna letter is approved, the current one will be repealed.

Through a plebiscite of two questions planned for next year, Chileans must approve or reject if a new Constitution is drafted, and what type of agency should do so, be it a Constitutional Mixed Convention or a Constitutional Convention.
