In Saxony-Anhalt, local politician Robert Möritz triggered a coalition crisis when it became known that he was previously active in the extreme right-wing scene. The CDU has now explained how it intends to proceed in this case.

The CDU in Saxony-Anhalt ties the whereabouts of a CDU local politician with connections to the neo-Nazi scene to narrow conditions. '

The 29-year-old Robert Möritz has until December 27 to write out all his activities in the extreme right-wing scene, as representatives of the state board and almost all district leaders unanimously decided at a meeting on Thursday evening in Magdeburg. He also had to explain that swastikas and other Nazi symbols were incompatible with the principles of the state CDU. State head Holger Stahlknecht presented this result.

Anyone who "consciously wore external identifying marks on their bodies or clothes" that suggested a right-wing extremist or anti-Semitic outlook "could not be a member of the CDU Saxony-Anhalt," said the regional association. This also applies to "intentionally right-wing extremist or anti-Semitic statements", their dissemination on social media and membership in right-wing extremist associations.

In addition, Möritz was asked to initially suspend his post as an assessor on the CDU district board of Anhalt-Bitterfeld.

If new circumstances arise that he has not set out, this will immediately lead to a party exclusion process, it was said. The state board must decide on such a decision. He wants to meet on December 28th and then listen to Möritz.

A week after revelations, Möritz had admitted to being part of a neo-Nazi demo in 2011. He wears a tattoo on his elbow that is popular with right-wing extremists as a symbol of identification. This tattoo is not compatible with membership in the CDU, the screech chiefs now decided. The district board in Anhalt-Bitterfeld had believed Möritz to have detached himself from the scene and initially left him on the board. Since then, this has caused nationwide criticism, including in the Union.
