2 of 10 | Hawaiian Airlines - At number nine is Hawaiian Airlines. "At The Points Guy we are the first consumers," says the website's chief executive, Brian Kelly. "I think there are a lot of airline classifications made by the airline industry that do not necessarily classify things that are important to consumers, such as price." (Hawaiian Airlines).

3 of 10 | JetBlue - JetBlue is at number eight: "I personally fly a lot with JetBlue and I love it, so it was kind of a surprise to see them at number eight," Kelly reflects. "But when the data is reviewed, they are simply not excellent in many areas and in time performance they really went down a lot." (AFP / Getty Images)

4 out of 10 | Spirit Airlines - At number seven is Spirit Airlines. "I strongly believe that we use the data behind all these classifications and we simply had to let the data speak, we didn't move companies based on our biases," says Kelly. (Spirit Airlines)

5 out of 10 | American Airlines - At number six is American Airlines. Kelly says he is a loyal American Airlines customer. "I definitely think these results try to push me to think outside the little bubble I live in," he says. (Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images North America / Getty Images)

6 of 10 | Frontier Airlines - Among the top five seats is Frontier Airlines. The rankings were based on 10 different criteria: the total data for each one was converted to a 10-point scale. (Michael Francis McElroy / Getty Images North America / Getty Images)

(CNN) - American Airlines and British Airways were rated among the worst airlines for long-haul flights, according to a survey of travelers by a consumer watchdog organization.

As part of the survey, more than 6,500 travelers were asked about customer service, boarding of planes and the cabin environment.

American Airlines was named the worst airline for long flights, with a score of 48%.

"American Airlines takes customer feedback very seriously, and we were disappointed to see the results of the Which? Survey, based on the experiences of 53 customers," an airline spokesperson told CNN.

"However, we recognize that there is always room for improvement and we will continue to strive to provide an excellent service that takes care of our clients on the journeys of life," the spokesman added.

For its part, British Airways received a score of 55% for short and long flights, being in the worst third place for the first category and second to last in the second classification.

But the airline questioned the accuracy of the report of the organization whose headquarters are in Great Britain.

"Our own data shows that customer satisfaction scores have increased and continue to increase, as we implement our investment of 6,500 million euros (8,400 million dollars) for customers in new aircraft, new foods, new rooms and new technology", British Airways said in a statement.

Ryanair was the airline with the worst rating on short flights: it reached a score of only 44%. Vueling Airlines (54%) and Wizz Air (56%) got some better results.

At the other end of the scale in the short distance travel category, Jet2 won applause for offering excellent service at affordable prices.

For long flights Singapore Airlines obtained the best results. Emirates and Virgin Atlantic also achieved good figures.

“Year after year, the same culprits continue to sink into new lows, but for many of us there is an option. You don't have to continue traveling on an airline that disappointed you, or one that you loved for years but has fallen in quality, ”said Rory Boland, which travel editor at Which? Travel, in a statement.
