Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Friday in his meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani that Tehran must adhere to its commitments in the nuclear deal it signed in 2015, to ensure the stability of the Middle East.

"Japan wants to do all it can to ease the tensions and stabilize the situation in the Middle East," her father told Spiritual at the start of their meeting in Tokyo. "As for Iran, I sincerely hope that the country will fully implement the nuclear agreement and play a role in ensuring peace and stability in the region."

In the meeting, Rouhani asked Abba to cooperate with other countries to help maintain the nuclear agreement. "Nuclear agreement, needless to say, is a very important agreement for Iran and this is one of the reasons why I strongly criticize the unilateral and illogical departure of the United States from the agreement," Rouhani said through a translator. "I hope Japan and other countries in the world will work hard to help maintain the nuclear agreement," he added.

In 2015, Iran, the United States and other countries signed the Joint Action Plan (JCPOA), under which Tehran restrained uranium enrichment capability and was rewarded for its sanctions relief. US President Donald Trump later resigned from the deal, which sought to prevent the development of an Iranian nuclear bomb, and increased economic sanctions on Tehran by blocking crude oil's international sales. For its part, Iran is gradually returning to its commitments for the year.

Japan, an ally of the United States, which maintains friendly relations with Iran, has been a leading customer of Iranian oil for decades, until the crackdown by the United States against the Iranian economy. Iran claims it has enriched uranium only for civilian purposes. But the United States and the United Nations believe it once had a nuclear weapons development plan.
