(CNN) - European Parliament urged the Nicaraguan government to end repression against the opposition and urged dialogue to resolve the crisis The resolution was passed on December 19 with 560 votes in favor, 12 against and 63 abstentions.

The document urges the Nicaraguan authorities to "end the repression against dissent and end the scheme of arbitrary detentions, torture and sexual violence." It also demands the dismantling of paramilitary forces and the release of detained protesters.

In addition, the European Parliament reiterated its condemnation of what it considers a lack of will on the part of the Government to achieve a meaningful dialogue with the opposition, in which a credible electoral process must be established, which guarantees “immediate, fair, transparent elections, with presence of international observers ”.

The possible suspension of Nicaragua from the Trade Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union, and the sending of a MEP mission to follow up on the situation in the country was even raised.

In Managua, leaders of the opposition Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy considered Friday that the resolution is evidence of the international isolation of the government of Daniel Ortega, and urged the president to make urgent decisions to avoid deepening the socio-political crisis The country has been living for 20 months.

The Ortega government has not officially reacted to the resolution of the European Parliament, although it always denied the existence of paramilitary groups, on the grounds that they are voluntary police officers who faced a failed coup attempt.

Ortega has repeatedly reiterated that the only dialogue is with the people and not with the Civic Alliance, stating that the elections will be held only in 2021.
