(ANSA) - ROME, DECEMBER 21 - The GiulioRegeni prize was established with a decree of the minister Lorenzo Fioramonti of interest with the boy's family. The objective - explains the ministry in a note - is to promote study and research activities in human and social science. Five awards will be given by the Ministry of Education, University and Research, named after Giulio Regeni, the young Italian PhD student from the University of Cambridge tortured and killed in Egypt in 2016, where he was to carry out his research. The prizes will be awarded every year on January 15th, on the occasion of the birth date of the young researcher.
"Fortunately there are many young Italian researchers, and not only Italian, who continue to travel the world, often difficult and complicated areas, driven by curiosity and passion for research - explains Minister Fioramonti - it is their honor, to the many 'Giulio' who they leave their home to go to meet the world to study it, understand it, and perhaps improve it, that we dedicate these awards. In the name of a young man who had chosen to devote himself to research and of whom we were too soon deprived because of a barbaric murder to date. Because his rigor, his humanity and his intelligence are of inspiration for many other future researchers ".
The awards aim to enhance the competence and quality of university students and young researchers. Master's and doctoral degrees will be devoted to the issue of the concrete implementation of the protection of human rights in the economic, social and political spheres. Of the five awards, three will be awarded for the master's thesis and two for the doctoral thesis. The work will be assessed by a Commission appointed by the Minister, which will include the parents of Giulio Regeni, Paola Deffendi and Claudio Regeni, and the family legal representative, Alessandra Ballerini.
The institution of recognition is part of the Strategy for the promotion of Italian higher education abroad 2017/2020 which provides for the internationalization of higher education in collaboration with the university system. (ANSA).
