Two men were arrested on Saturday evening by Berlin police on suspicion of involvement in the shooting of a suspect in the Christmas market at Breitscheid Square, which in 2016 carried out a 12-man over-riding attack. Police cleared the market from visitors. "Currently, investigative teams are working on the scene and are investigating the suspected object," police said. "All visitors were evacuated from the market in an orderly manner, and searches were conducted on site," they added.
According to media reports, the suspects are German residents of Syrian origin who are known to the police, who were allegedly involved in "Islamic terrorism".
The Berlin bombing attack was carried out on December 19, 2016 by Anis Omri, seeking a Muslim refugee of Tunisian descent. Twelve people were killed in the attack and 49 were injured. Among those killed was an Israeli. The terrorist, who was driving the truck, fled the scene after the attack, and a few days later was shot dead in Milan, Italy. The Islamic State terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the attack.
