The opposition's attempts to provoke a rebellious rule of his generation suffered a burst of failure this year as regime forces suppressed a series of demonstrations and rebellions by various forces of the military. Opposition leader Juan Guido even had to flee the country at one point.
Due to the difficult economic situation in the country and the suppression of ongoing civil liberties, an influx of hundreds of thousands of refugees has fled the country mainly to the territories of Brazil and neighboring Colombia.
