Unknown persons broke into a synagogue in Modi'in Illit during the night (Monday), breached the Holy Ark and tried to burn the Torah scrolls. There were signs of bleach and gasoline, according to eyewitnesses. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Around 6:30 this morning, worshipers arrived at the Boyan Synagogue in the city and discovered the great damage. In pictures released from the event, the Holy Ark appears to be sooty, and that damage has also been done to one of the remaining Torah scrolls.

Evidence from the scene shows that burglars have damaged furniture by bleaching. On the Sabbath Square website, they stated that they uprooted the newly installed security cameras. "They broke the Vault of the Holy Ark and burned two Torah scrolls. They found bleach there. They took out the cameras that would not see who did it. Heavy disaster," the Gabonites quoted in the Haredi media. "The first worshipers came and were shocked to see the Holy Ark broken and the Torah scroll charred. It is heartbreaking to see such a play."

Police said a report was received this morning about an outbreak of a synagogue in the city of Modi'in Elite, which reportedly caused damage to Torah scrolls to the synagogue and stolen silver items. Police forces and ID investigators arrived at the scene and began investigating.
