Iran on Monday unveiled the heavy water reactor it built in the city of Arak in the western part of the country and allowed foreign journalists to enter the complex and take first pictures from the facility.

Iran's Atomic Energy Agency chairman Ali Akbar Salehi addressed his country's uranium enrichment program, saying that contrary to Western claims, the upgraded facility in Purdue could produce plutonium, but not for military use.

"The West claims the reactor is capable of producing eight pounds of plutonium a year," Salehi said. "After redesigning the systems, the reactor is capable of producing pounds of plutonium each year, which is not enough for nuclear weapons production." According to Salehi, Iran has 800 pounds of enriched uranium.

However, Salehi insisted that his country had no intention of producing nuclear fuel for military purposes. The reasoning provided by Salehi is a decree by the Islamic Revolutionary founder of Iran, Ruhalla Khomeini, which prohibits the production of nuclear weapons.

Salehi claimed that the heavy water production facility in Iraq is nearing completion after 16 years in which the project is being implemented. "If we say that there are 52 different systems at Arak reactor, today we can say that 20 of them are already ready for use," he added. "Completing the heavy water reactor in Iraq is one of the quiet achievements of the Islamic Republic in the field of nuclear technology."
