Moscow-Sana

Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that Russian forces played an important role in supporting the efforts of the Syrian Arab Army in the war on terrorism in Syria.

Russia has been participating in the war on terrorism alongside the Syrian Arab Army since September 2015 at the request of the Syrian Arab Republic, and during this period terrorist organizations have incurred heavy losses.

In a wide-ranging meeting with Russian Defense Ministry personnel in Moscow today, Putin said that the Russian Air Force group, warships and submarines of the Russian fleet stationed at Hmeimim Airport and the naval base in Tartus are a guarantee of security and stability.

For his part, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoyogo indicated that the Russian Air Force in Syria is currently carrying out air missions to support the Syrian Arab Army in combating the remnants of terrorist groups, pointing to countering dozens of drones and missile attacks on Russian military sites in Syria this year.

Shoigu explained that the Syrian government, with the support of "active" Russian soldiers, is implementing a huge program to restore life to normal and return the displaced in the country, and since 2015 "about two million displaced and internally displaced persons have returned to their permanent places of residence."

Shoigu explained that the Syrian air defense systems are more effective than the "Patriot" systems, noting that the Syrian air defense systems have since 2015 failed dozens of hostile air strikes and shot down hundreds of missiles, air-guided missiles and drones.
