A Chabad rabbi in his 30s was shot dead in the Beechwood neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, according to local media outlets in the state. According to local media outlets, the man was shot in the chest and died after being sought for medical treatment.
The rabbi reportedly invited the assailant to enter his home, after apparently knowing the man, where a verbal dispute ensued between the two that ended by the assailant shooting the rabbi's chest and a woman who was present at the home and fled the scene. Police are pursuing the attacker.
While the background for the incident is unclear, the United States has seen a large increase in the number of anti-Semitic incidents in recent weeks. Last week, a kosher grocery store was attacked in Jersey City, New Jersey, and three people, including two Jews, were screwed.
In April, an armed man attacked a Chabad synagogue in a city near Powell, San Diego, California. In the attack, defined as a hate crime, Lori Gilbert, a member of the Jewish community, was killed and others injured. In a statement released by the attacker, John Ernest, he accused Jews in "meticulous planning of destroying the European race".
