According to the Preventive Health Index, 32.7 percent of deaths could be prevented by effective public health preventive measures, that is, before the onset of the disease or injury. Another 27.8 percent of deaths could be prevented by effective medical care, even after the onset of the disease or injury. However, relative to developed countries, the percentage of deaths avoided in Israel as well as the rate of deaths avoided is very low. The component of preventable mortality through preventive measures is the lowest in Israel among the developed countries.

Of all the causes of preventable deaths that could be prevented: 34.7 percent of cancers, 18.7 percent of preventable deaths resulted from cardiovascular disease, with 9.2 percent of ischemic heart disease and 5.7 percent of cerebrovascular disease. In addition, 9.2 percent are due to respiratory illness, 7.6 percent to diabetes, five percent to sepsis and 12 percent to external causes including accidents, suicide and murder.

As mentioned, among the causes of death that could have been prevented through preventive actions, 35.7 percent of them stem from cancer, primarily lung cancer with 58.8 percent, followed by gastric cancer with 13.2 percent. Of the causes of death that could have been prevented through pretreatment or a more appropriate and appropriate treatment method, 33 percent were cancer, with 44.2 percent breast cancer and 36.1 percent colorectal cancer.
