Mexico is accustomed to cases of severe government corruption and the unrestrained rampage of drug cartels in the country, but the arrest of former Internal Security Minister and Federal Intelligence Agency Chairman Garcia Luna succeeded in making waves and shock.

Luna was arrested yesterday in the state of Texas in the United States and charged with receiving bribes from Sineloa's drug cartel, a crime organization headed by Joaquin Guzman, commonly known as "El Chapo," imprisoned in the United States.

Luna served as Minister of Public Security under President Philippa Calderon from 2006 to 2012. Luna not only served as minister but also as the face of the national fight against crime and the federal police in Mexico.

Luna led Calderon's move to fight the drug cartels, a campaign that took the lives of thousands, in partnership with the United States, during which thousands of police and soldiers were sent to fight with the cartels.

"Luna is charged with taking millions of dollars from Joaquin's Siniloa cartel, El Chapo, Guzman, while commanding the federal police in Mexico and responsible for the safety and safety of Mexico's citizens," said U.S. Attorney Richard Donahue, adding that Luna was also suspected of violating immigration laws to the United States.
