The Anti-Semitism Order: First Claim filed | Israel today

United States

About two weeks after President Trump signed the order, an Israeli student at Columbia University filed a lawsuit stating that students from the Justice to Palestine group called him a "Zionist pig"

Jonathan Cartan, a 23-year-old student at Columbia University, filed a lawsuit this week for violating the anti-Semitism order at the academic institution, the Jewish Press website reports. According to Cartan, who served in the IDF with the rank of sergeant, he was harassed by anti-Semitic backgrounds by professors and students on the campus of members of the "Justice for Palestine" movement.

Carten draws on the lawsuit signed by President Donald Trump on December 11, 2019, which targets the boycott lawsuits against Israel, such as the BDS, which are widespread in many universities and colleges. The Trump administration has long argued that BDS is a form of anti-Semitism similar to discrimination against minorities or women.

The order recognizes Judaism as a nation and the right of the Jews to the state, and creates discrimination against the common national identity of Jewish and Israeli students and not merely as a form of religious or racial discrimination. Defining Judaism as a form of national identity allows the education department to launch civil rights investigations in schools that it believes do not foster an open climate for Jewish students.

Attorney Brock Goldstein, representing Cartan, runs the "Law of Martial" Project - a Jewish advocacy group that works for civil rights and provides legal assistance to Jews who were discriminated against because of their faith. According to a complaint filed by Attorney Goldstein last April, he attended the event Supporting Israel at the university, during which a professor of Arabic literature at the academic institution approached him, pointing to him and exclaiming, "Don't believe the word he says, he's an institution person."

The complaint alleges that Cartan "felt embarrassed after a person of authority publicly addressed him and accused him of spying on a foreign government for his religion and national identity." Following the lawsuit, another case was brought from November 2019 involving Joseph Massad, a professor of modern Arab politics and history. Speaking at the annual Palestine Center conference and the Jerusalem Foundation, the professor said: "The Oslo Accords inaugurated the process of liquidating the Palestinian national struggle as the 'century deal' plans to end it. The only thing standing in the way is the ongoing Palestinian resistance to Israeli colonialism and settlement. Of Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades for Israeli invasions in Gaza. "

According to the lawsuit, "Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the Hamas military wing defined in the United States as a terrorist organization, has murdered more than 650 civilians and is responsible for the kidnapping and murder of Sharon Edri, Cartan's uncle."

The late Sgt. Edri was abducted in 1996 from the village of Tsurif by a squad of terrorists who belonged to Izz Din al-Qassam when he got on their car while hitching a ride. Shortly after the trip began, one of the terrorists felt that the late Edri suspected them and shot him on the spot. The squad buried Edri's body in the countryside and only seven months later was spotted following strenuous searches.
