The lake is located near Turkey's eastern border with Iran, from which many migrants cross the border towards Turkey, in order to reach their destination - Western Europe. So far, it is unclear why the migrants were in Lake Van, a lake that is all overflowing in Turkey, and does not actually allow the transition from one country to another.

According to Turkish news agency Anadolu, since the beginning of 2019, more than 123,000 illegal immigrants trying to reach Europe from Turkey's northwestern border have been arrested. This emerges from security data obtained by the agency from sources in the state.
