The President of the European Parliament David Sassoli warns against measures against global warming with "social explosives". Climate protection that leaves people in regions dependent on coal alone will not be successful, he told the newspapers of the Funke media group. On the contrary: This would be "as fatal as doing nothing".
The transition must be "made fair". Therefore, Parliament welcomes the transitional fund announced by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen with a targeted volume of up to 100 billion euros.
This so-called green deal stipulates that the European Union will be climate neutral by 2050 (read more about it here). This means that from then on the remaining emissions of climate-damaging greenhouse gases will be fully compensated.
Sassoli said the project will only succeed if the goal of climate neutrality is seen as an opportunity - "for innovation and growth, new jobs, a healthier life". The EU must show other countries that "the European way not only leads to more climate protection, but also brings many other advantages". China, for example, is watching the developments in climate protection in the EU "very interested".
