(CNN) - A medical emergency in full flight by Delta Airlines ended with a girl declared dead when the plane landed at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday night, authorities said.
Delta Flight 2423, which was headed to Seattle, should have returned to Los Angeles due to a medical problem on board, according to Ian Gregor, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The passenger was identified as 10-year-old Janice Xu, according to Lt. David Smith of the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office.
The autopsy will be done in the course of the next day or later, Smith told CNN. No additional information will be available until this procedure is completed.
CNN affiliate KTLA reported that the girl suffered a cardiac arrest on the plane.
“Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to medical assistance for a minor girl and worked furiously to save her life. Unfortunately, all efforts were useless and the girl was beyond medical help, ”the department said in a statement.
Police officers also responded and determined that there were no crimes involved. They are not investigating the incident anymore, said agent Mike Lopez.
Delta Air Lines confirmed the incident and said the company is working to accommodate customers who were on the flight.
