Photo: Reuters, Edit: Amit SimchaA US civilian contractor was killed Saturday night in an Iraqi military-based missile attack that serves as an ammunition storage facility near the city of Karkuk. The base hosts forces from the United States Army. U.S. officials also reported more injuries to U.S. and Iraqi forces. It has also been reported that Iraqi security forces are expected to respond to the attack and will also investigate, but so far no organization has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Iraqi Army reported that the missiles were fired on the K1 military base 15 miles northwest of Kyrchuk in the north of the country. In addition, eyewitnesses said security forces found Katyusha missiles inside an abandoned vehicle near the base.
A US military official said that most of the Iraqi strikes at bases that host U.S. military forces were executed by pro-Iranian militias, as the Iraqi border is part of the land route Iran is trying to establish.

Over the past few weeks there have been more rocket attacks at Iraqi military bases, with most of the US troops stationed, but no casualties. Earlier this month, the United States imposed sanctions on three Tehran-backed Iraqi militia leaders as part of supporting Iraqi protesters and out of opposition to the Iranian influence. The United States and Iran, Iraq's two main allies, have been influential in its affairs since the 2003 US invasion, which overthrew Saddam Hussein.
