No organization has been responsible for the explosion so far. But the al-Shabaab affiliated with al-Qaeda has often carried out such attacks. The murderous organization was removed from the Mogadishu area a few years ago, but continues to carry out terrorist attacks in high-profile areas, such as checkpoints and hotels in the city.

An eyewitness who lives nearby told Reuters that when he left his home he counted at least 13 people dead. He said: "Dozens of wounded cried for help. The police immediately opened fire and I rushed back to my house."
