(CNN) - A woman in Australia needed 25 stitches on her face and almost lost an eye after being mutilated by a kangaroo while walking her dog.

The attack occurred near a popular walking trail in the city of Wodonga, in the state of Victoria, according to 9News, a CNN affiliate. Dina, who refused to share her last name, released her companion dog and the animal began chasing a large male kangaroo, which led her to try to intervene.

"I ran up the embankment to try to get my dog ​​away, but I didn't realize I was only three or four meters behind the kangaroo," Dina told 9News. "And that was when I felt that the kangaroo was panicking and thinking: 'I am being attacked everywhere.'"

He turned to the right when the kangaroo attacked her from behind and threw her to the ground.

The woman needed 25 stitches on her face and an operation in the hospital for her leg injuries.

"I ripped off the back of my leg, now I know that if I hadn't turned around, I probably would have gutted," he told 9News.

The kangaroo began to "hit" and jump on it, he said. She died and told herself to "just wait until it's over."

It eventually worked, and the kangaroo left her with blood gushing from her head, according to 7News, a CNN affiliate. A passing person helped her take care of her injuries and took her to the hospital.

Dina added that she didn't blame the kangaroo because her dog had chased him, causing the attack.
