The year 2020 is already underway, but Social Security figures for 2018 are bleak, and the dismal social disparities of 2018. The report released Monday shows that compared with 2017, the poverty rate for children has increased by 0.4% and poverty among senior citizens has increased by 1.6 %.

National Insurance claims that the increase in the poverty rate of the elderly occurred due to an improvement in the general standard of living on the one hand (which increased the poverty line by 4.1%) and a minimal increase (0.3%) in Social Security allowances on the other hand, being linked only to the increase in the price index.

Increase in poverty among the elderly and children

The report also states that in 2018, there were 1,810,500 poor people living in poverty in Israel. Every fifth Israeli is defined as poor, of whom 841,700 were children - hence every third child in Israel is a poor child living in food insecurity. But the poverty rate among people remains unchanged and stands at 21.2%.

In 2018, the poverty line for individuals was NIS 3,593 and a couple NIS 5,750, with anyone earning below this amount - considered a poor person. The poverty line of a six-person family stands at 12,218, which means that in families with four or more children, the minimum wage for both spouses is no longer enough to live above the official poverty line.

Poverty in Israel: A comparison between 2018 and 2017

The report also has a small positive trend compared to 2017 and shows a decline in the proportion of poor living families in Israel: In 2018, 469,400 families lived in poverty, however, in 2017, 466,400 families in poverty lived in Israel. % To 18.0%.

Another minor improvement relates to the depth of poverty, that is, how far the person is far from his income from the poverty line. In 2018, the depth of poverty among families decreased by 5%, but on the other hand, it increased among the elderly - that is, the income of poor families, headed by an elderly person, moved away from the poverty line.

The real state of poverty in Israel

"I've worked all my life, and now I have no holiday money"

Unfortunately, in 2018, too, in international comparisons, Israel ranks among the "top" countries in the poverty rate (fourth place alongside the US, Turkey and Korea) and the two highest poverty rates among children in the victim (alongside Turkey).

According to Eli Cohen, CEO of Fatahon Lev, "the Israeli government has closed the issue of poverty in the backyard, leaving almost two million poor to face alone against their fate. The purpose of the report is important and essential, but without the lessons learned, taking government steps and changing policy on the issue, it is meaningless at this stage. "

Director General of Social Security Mr. Meir Spiegeler said: "While there is encouraging data, there is still a lot of work ahead of us. The government is committed to continuing efforts to lead to a significant reduction in poverty, with an emphasis on veteran citizens. "

"Social Security supports linking veterans' allowances to the average wage in the economy and not to the index, as is the case today. The change is mainly required in light of the rising life expectancy, for about a million veteran citizens whose duty as a company is to make sure they live in dignity," says Spigler.
