Ambassadors of Israel, Germany and the United States in Poland on Monday rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin's claims that Poland bears responsibility for the outbreak of World War II.

"Dear President Putin, Hitler and Stalin conspired to start World War II. That is a fact. Poland has been the victim of this terrible conflict," wrote US Ambassador to Warsaw Georgette Moscher on Twitter, English and Polish. The Russian Embassy in Warsaw replied in its own tweet: "Dear ambassador, do you really think you know more about history than diplomacy?"

World War II broke out on September 1, 1939, when the Nazis invaded Poland. Two weeks later, the Red Army also attacked Poland from the east, in what the Poles call "a stab in the back." Last week, Putin claimed that collusion between the Western powers and Hitler paved the way for World War II. He also described Poland as an anti-Semitic state, which supported Hitler's plans to destroy European Jews. German Ambassador Rolf Nickel and Israeli Ambassador Alexander Ben Zvi said yesterday that the war was a product of the 1939 Nazi-Soviet agreement.

Polish historian Mariusz Volos told the Onet website that Putin aims to "create a rift between Poland and the United States and the Jewish diaspora in the world." He said Putin was trying to erase Stalin's alliance with Hitler from history. British historian Roger Morehouse wrote on Twitter that Putin's words made clear his nature and the importance of the agreement.
