Photo: Reuters, edited by Tal ResnickA 10-year-old Palestinian boy was spotted by the Spanish police inside a vegetable cart, which was led by two people trying to reach the country from Morocco. The Moroccan couple was arrested at the border crossing between the Spanish enclave from Leila in Morocco and Spain's European territory, and the child was hidden between vegetables and fruits.
Apparently, the boy's mother, who lives in a temporary shelter for immigrants in the Spanish enclave, paid for the child's transfer to Europe. It is unknown whether he had family members who were supposed to pick him up across the border. According to the local police chief, authorities decided to search the cart because of its exceptional gravity. The couple was arrested, and the boy was sent back to his mother. The two - a 38-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man - were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking offenses.
Malayla is one of the key focal points for migrants trying to reach Europe, because it is one of the only transit points shared by the European bloc with the African continent. The second is Sayta, another Spanish enclave bordering Morocco.
Spain prohibits immigrants from cruising ferries from its enclaves in Morocco to Europe. This policy was condemned by the European Commission responsible for immigration.
