Police Investigations Department on Wednesday indicted the Beit Shemesh Police Detective Yaakov Sheetrit on charges of assault and disruption of court proceedings after he pulled a detainee's head in Beit Shemesh. Another police officer involved in the case was brought to disciplinary proceedings.

According to the indictment, filed by Attorney Chen Kabiri-Harari of the Police Investigations Department, in July 2019 during a police operation in the city, while leading a detainee to the patrol car, the policeman grabbed the complainant's head and proceeded to drive toward the patrol car through the wig.

On the same day, the defendant delivered a statement to a police investigator stating that the complainant attacked him with punches and blows to his face, scraping the front of his right hand and bruising his left hand. The defendant also stated in a statement that when he tried to arrest the complainant, the rest of the crowd that was attacking the defendant kicked him and punched him in the head and the rest of his body.

The indictment states that during the incident, the defendant was beaten and his leg was defaced. As a result of his false version, a criminal case was opened against the complainant, he was arrested and his arrest extended by the court.

The incident occurred during a protest against the demolition of an illegal synagogue in the city, during which some protesters rioted and threw objects at police. The indictment states that "at one point of the carriage, the complainant got up and moved toward the patrol with the police. The complainant went toward the car with both hands being held by two police officers and the defendant pushed him in the back."

"Suddenly and for no reason, the defendant grabbed the complainant's head and proceeded to steer him toward the mobile by pulling the wig," the indictment described. "Due to the intensity of the pull, the complainant's head was lowered down. As a result of the complainant's arrest, there were signs of bruising to his face, back, elbow, forearm, shoulder and pelvis."
