The young woman, whose name was not released by the media, was arrested after police say she backed her from allegations against Israeli boys, whom she accused of raping in a hotel room in Ayia Napa last July. She alleges she returned from her charge only under police pressure, which investigated her for an extended period without the presence of a lawyer. The prosecution and the court rejected this version.

The affair has received a lot of coverage in the UK, from which about a third of the 3.9 million tourists visited Cyprus in 2018. The young woman faces up to one year in prison, and her lawyers said she intended to appeal.
