After the attack on a policeman on New Year's Eve in the Connewitz district of Leipzig, the political division of the city becomes apparent: the left accuses the police of being brutal. "Police groups ran into crowds again and again," wrote the left-wing MP Juliane Nagel in a blog post.
The CDU demands political consequences from New Year's Eve from Leipzig's Mayor Burkhard Jung (SPD). "There has been enough violence in the past few weeks. OB Jung and his coalition of trivialization have done nothing against these anti-democratic structures for long enough," said Leipzig CDU leader Thomas Feist. Jung had allowed Leipzig to become a hotspot of the extreme left.
According to the police, the 38-year-old policeman was badly injured by pyrotechnics during the riots. Several people have thrown stones, bottles and firecrackers at emergency services. The police had torn the helmet off his head before it was attacked, police circles said. He therefore lost consciousness and had to undergo emergency surgery.

Mayor Jung condemned the attack. "Unfortunately, the new year did not begin peacefully at the Connewitzer Kreuz, but started with a violent outbreak of criminal violence," he said on Wednesday. "My thoughts are with the injured police officer and his family and I wish him a speedy recovery." The mayor election takes place in Leipzig in February, and Jung starts again.
Left-wing deputy Nagel had written on Twitter: "Uff. Cops out of #Connewitz gains a new meaning after the turn of the year. She had received a lot of criticism for her comments.
The Junge Union Sachsen stated: "If the Left Party tolerates the violent rhetoric of its actors or even approves of it, it is a case for the protection of the constitution and should be prohibited."
