The Anti-Amendment Campaign lasted for more than half a year, and more than 6,000 people were arrested. Some people detained the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre. However, several people in custody recently complained that the lunch box provided by the Department was "cold" and unhygienic. Member of the Democratic Legislative Council, Lin Zhuoting, sent a letter to the Commissioner of Correctional Services, Hu Yingming, requesting follow-up of the relevant meal arrangements and immediately making improvements. The Correctional Services Department responded to "Hong Kong 01" inquiries and stated that in response to environmental protection, food suppliers who provided private meals to persons in custody awaiting trial at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre had adopted non-plastic disposable tableware to hold food earlier last year.

Lin Zhuoting said that he received complaints from several prisoners that the lunch boxes provided by the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre had recently been changed from styrofoam lunch boxes to cartons, which made the food easily cold. Some people had diarrhea after eating.

Coupled with the recent cold weather, Lin Zhuoting considers that inmates to receive warm and clean meals are a basic human right and a prisoner's right, and urges the Correctional Services Department to follow up and improve immediately.

Correctional Services Department: Use of non-plastic disposable tableware in response to environmental protection

The Correctional Services Department responded to "Hong Kong 01" enquiries and stated that under the law, persons in custody awaiting trial can purchase private meals at their own expense. In response to environmental protection, food suppliers providing private meals to persons in custody awaiting trial at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre have adopted non-plastic disposable tableware to hold food early last year. The Correctional Services Department also stated that if a person in custody had any comments on private meals, they could be reflected through the institution's management or directly to the supplier.

Members of the Legislative Council, Shao Jiazhen, Zhang Chaoxiong and She Minlian, held a gathering outside the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre on the evening of 20th last month to support those arrested during the storm. Huang Haoming, the host of the rally, said at the time that about 79 demonstrators had been detained in the reception centre.
