Tens of thousands of people attend the funeral of Iranian Quds Force commander Kassem Suleimani, who was killed in a US air strike on Thursday night near Baghdad airport. The mass ceremony also includes the funeral of the additional dead in the attack, Abu Mahdi al-Mohandas, Iraqi deputy commander of the Shiite militias, and several other militiamen who were with them in a car convoy.

The mourners on the death of a Revolutionary Guards official gathered early in the morning on the streets of Iraq's capital, waving state flags and pro-Iranian militia, the body responsible for organizing the procession, in a gloomy atmosphere. The journey has left the Green Zone of the capital, the fortified international complex, and will pass through the important cities of Shiite Najaf and Karbala south of Baghdad.

The procession came from the temple of Imam Katz in the city, one of the most sacred sites of Shia. The mourners marched alongside militia troops in a solemn caravan, shouting "No, no, America," "Death to America, Death to Israel."

"The funeral is an expression of loyalty to eliminated leaders," said Muhammad Fadel, one of the ceremony's attendees. "It's a painful blow, but it won't shock us," he added. Two helicopters hovered over the procession, attended by the Iraqi prime minister and other senior members of the pro-Iranian militia.

Suleimani's body is expected to arrive in Tehran today in the evening before passing through the Holy Shi'ite city of Demon, and on Sunday a religious ceremony will be held near the grave of Imam Raza. On Tuesday, a ceremony will be held in memory of Suleimani at Tehran University and according to the Revolutionary Guards in the evening, he will be buried in the city of Karman where he grew up. Last night, Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, came to Kassem Suleimani's widow's house as part of a condolence visit to the family home.

The funeral of a Revolutionary Guards official began hours after what appears to be another US offensive in Iraq. Media outlets in the country reported that at least six pro-Iranian militia members were killed tonight in an air strike north of Baghdad. Pentagon officials confirmed to Newsweek that the United States was attacking targets in Baghdad, targeting anti-Imam Ali regiments, adding that there was "a high likelihood" of their leader being eliminated - Shubul al-Zaidi. They say it was part of the operation approved by United States President Donald Trump on Thursday morning that led to the assassination of Qods Force leader Qassem Suleimani.

However, the Iraqi army and the United States-led coalition denied reports of an attack in the Taji camp area, saying there was no air activity in the area at the time. The militias initially said they were affected medical personnel, but later denied that an assault had taken place.

Following Suleimani's assassination, Britain today warned its citizens and sought to avoid traveling to Iraq, outside the Kurdish-controlled region, or Iran. Foreign Minister Dominique Rab said: "Given the increased tensions in the region, the Foreign Office now recommends not going to Iraq, except the Kurdistan region, and carefully consider whether it is essential to travel to Iran."

Tens of thousands of people went to rallies last night in Tehran plazas following Suleimani's assassination. During the rallies, which took place immediately after Friday prayers at the mosques in the city, the participants carried signs with the images of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as Sulmani himself, along with "Death to America" posters.

Reportedly, children, women and seniors attended the rally despite the much-needed pressure. Also, participants read derogatory calls against U.S. President Donald Trump. "The axis of evil is America, the essence of religion and the Koran is death to America," they said. "Condolences to the leader of our revolution."

Not yet eliminated, a Revolutionary Guards official has been targeted as a target for many years, even before leaving the shadows in the middle of the past decade. Suleimani has led the Quds Force, which has been responsible for the Revolutionary Guards operations outside Iran's borders, since 1998. Its forces and allies are responsible for the deaths of Americans, Israelis and thousands of civilians in the region.

Until the rise of the Sunni Islamic State in the middle of the previous decade, it maintained a low profile while strengthening ties between Tehran and Hezbollah in Lebanon, President Bashar Assad in Syria and Shiite militias in Iraq. He recently provided weapons and explosives, which, according to the United States, led to the killing and wounding of thousands of American soldiers, and is considered the true landlord in Iraq.
