Mexico 2019: another year marked by violence 5:18
(CNN) - A 13-year-old boy died when a family residing in the United States and traveling through Mexico was attacked by an armed group on Saturday, Tamaulipas authorities said in a statement.
According to the authorities, armed individuals detained the family while traveling to the United States on the Reynosa-Nuevo Laredo highway.
“The individuals reached and collided to force them to stop. Then they shot at the victims and fled in another van, ”authorities said Sunday in a statement.
The Tamaulipas government Public Safety spokesman, Luis Alberto Rodriguez told CNN that the two minors who were victims of the attack on Sunday in Tamaulipas are US citizens, residents of the state of Oklahoma; Both adults have Mexican origin, Rodríguez confirmed.
In addition, Rodriguez added that the family was traveling at night on a little traveled route at that time.

Three vehicles were found at the site, two with plates from the state of Oklahoma and one more with plates from Tamaulipas that would have been used and abandoned by the aggressors, according to a statement from the Government of the state of Tamaulipas.
A 48-year-old man, a 42-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy who were injured in the attack were taken to a hospital in Nuevo León and his condition is stable.
So far, authorities have not detailed the reason for the attack and the Attorney General of the state of Tamaulipas is investigating the aggression.

A US State Department official confirmed to CNN the murder of the U.S. citizen.
“We can confirm that a US citizen was killed, and two US citizens were injured, in an attack in Tamaulipas, Mexico, on January 4. We offer our deepest condolences to the family for their loss, and we are providing all appropriate consular assistance. We are closely monitoring the investigation of local authorities about this brutal attack. Out of respect for the privacy of the family, we have no further comments at this time, ”the official told CNN.
