Are we ready to know if there are aliens? 0:56

(CNN) - Aliens definitely exist, Britain's first astronaut said, and they may live among us on Earth, but so far they have not been detected.

Helen Sharman, who visited the Soviet space station Mir in 1991, told the Observer newspaper this Sunday that "aliens exist, there is no doubt."

"There are so many billions of stars in the universe that there must be all kinds of life forms," he continued. “Will they be like you and me, carbon and nitrogen compounds? Maybe not".

Then, in a theory that should probably make you suspicious of your colleagues, Sharman added: "They may be here now and we just can't see them."

Sharman was the first of seven Britons to enter the space.

Chemistry spent eight days as a researcher in the space mission when she was 27 years old, making her one of the youngest people to enter orbit.

NASA's rovers are tracking Mars for evidence of past or present life forms, but humanity's infinite fascination with extraterrestrial life forms has so far proved fruitless.

However, Sharman is not the only person who speculates that we have had friction with aliens.

A former Pentagon official who led a secret government program to investigate possible UFOs, revealed in 2017, told CNN at the time that he believes there is evidence of extraterrestrial life coming to Earth.

In another part of his interview, Sharman said "there is no greater beauty than looking at the Earth from above."

"I will never forget the first time I saw him," he added.

Sharman also discussed her frustration with observers who define her for her sex. “People often describe me as the first British woman in space, but in reality I was the first British person. It is revealing that otherwise we would assume he was a man, ”he said.

“When Tim Peake went into space, some people simply forgot about me. That a man was the first was the norm, so I am delighted to have altered that order. ”

CNN has contacted Sharman for comments.
