Strike: by car, bicycle or on foot, our tips for getting around Ile-de-France

Barely back from vacation and you are immediately plunged back into strikes against the pension reform. Because if the situation has improved a bit in transport since the beginning of the movement on December 5, with all the metro lines open on Monday, we still have to juggle between the closed strategic sections and stations, the restricted schedules and the frequencies reduced. What complicate the round trips of workers. And this Tuesday, January 7 will not escape the rule, according to the traffic forecasts released this Monday evening by the SNCF and the RATP.

Bikes, rental cars, carpooling, scooters: from the start of the movement, we presented several alternatives to public transport. Here they are again grouped together in a guide intended for all Ile-de-France residents, updated with the reduction offers for the various services.

Car sharing offered by the region

There are many urban carpooling platforms in Ile-de-France. The principle is simple: you register online and get in touch with drivers. Ile-de-France Mobilités offers free carpooling for all Ile-de-France residents during strike days in partnership with carpooling platforms: Blablalines, Covoit'ici, Karos, Klaxit, Ouihop.

There are also Citygo, Covivo… and Flixcar, launched by Flixbus in December. The newcomer wants to be a fierce competitor by promising to take no commission or fees. The passenger pays the driver, in cash, upon departure.

Without forgetting the groups dedicated to carpooling which flourish on Facebook, initiatives of inhabitants, municipalities or agglos, like the one which lists the journeys from Draveil (Essonne). Just search your city on the social network to see what exists.

And if there are three or more of you by car, you have the right to use the motorway lanes dedicated to buses and taxis on the A1, A6, A10 and A12 during the strike.

Discounted self-service cars

If you cannot find a carpool, you can always rent a vehicle near you from an individual on platforms such as Getaround and Ouicar. As for self-service electric cars, the operators Free2Move, Moov'in Paris and ShareNow allow you to move around Paris, then park without having to pay for parking.

For longer-term rentals in the capital and in the outer suburbs, turn to Ubeeqo and Communauto. The first offers the “Passion” subscription for 3 months to its new users as well as 20 euros to try the service, until February 5, while the second offers a single car rental rate at 22 euros for 10 hours and 70 km, petrol included, for the entire duration of the strike. Only constraint: return the vehicle in the same place at the end of the rental.

The apps to find where to park

Zenpark, OnePark, Yespark, oPnGo or even Parking Map… These apps allow you to reserve a space in an underground car park in advance. ZenPark gives you a 15% reduction in all its Ile-de-France car parks until April 5, 2020. OnePark offers you 10% for any reservation starting during the current strike month.

The bicycle, electric ... or not

To help the many new “bike-riders” pedaling since December 5, we have calculated the journey times (map below) between different places in Paris with the help of the Géovélo application. You will need, for example, 14 minutes between Porte de Clichy and Saint-Lazare station, 17 minutes between Porte de Saint-Cloud and Porte d'Orléans or 16 minutes between Gare du Nord and Place de la Bastille.

Many Ile-de-France residents have also decided to pedal (and sometimes, with pleasure), for their commuter suburbs or suburbs-Paris journeys.

Five associations of cyclists from Essonne and Hauts-de-Seine have thus shown that it is possible, and even easy, to reach the capital by bicycle along the route of the RER B and line 13 of the metro. Verdict? This alternative route between Palaiseau (Essonne) and Montparnasse (Paris, XIVth) can be traveled in 1h42.

If your old bike is not ready to ride, you can turn to the traditional Vélib '(mechanical or electric) in one of the 1340 stations present in around sixty municipalities in Greater Paris (find the map here). Note that in the capital, Jump offers the cost of unlocking its bikes during the strike.

In the outer ring, Zoov's electric two-wheelers, already located between Massy and Gif-sur-Yvette (Essonne), have seen their perimeter widened to go from Bourg-la-Reine (Hauts-de-Seine) to Saint-Rémy -lès-Chevreuse (Yvelines). Strategically located at the RER stations and near the most frequented sites (company headquarters, student campuses and city centers), they allow you to take advantage of 2 x 15 free minutes until the end of the disruption in transport .

You can also opt for Véligo, a service acclaimed by Ile-de-France residents since December 5. The rental of this electrically assisted bicycle (VAE) for 6 months, for 40 euros per month, includes repair and maintenance. The monthly subscription can be paid up to 50% by the employer, alone or in addition to the Navigo for travelers making intermodal journeys. In December, a school principal from Massy (Essonne) used it to cover the 23km separating her home from the Academic Inspectorate in Evry-Courcouronnes in 1 hour 20 minutes.

The strike is also an opportunity to invest in a VAE, thanks to the help of 500 euros implemented since December 1 st by the Ile-de-France region. Thierry, a resident of Lamorlaye (Oise), got on his own on December 16 to reach his office in Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis), 45 km from his home. Or a round trip of 92 km. For, all the same, 2:27 to pedal in the morning and almost three hours on the return!

Move on the Seine

For a journey comparable to part of metro line 1, plus the view, Batobus provides a river shuttle service on the Seine with 9 stations served: Eiffel Tower, Invalides, Musée d'Orsay, Saint-Germain-des- Meadows, Notre-Dame, Jardin des Plantes, Town Hall, Louvre, Place de la Concorde. Allow between 8 and 17 minutes between each station. Service is provided from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (7 p.m. Friday to Sunday), approximately every 23 minutes. The pass, from 15 to 17 euros, allows an unlimited number of journeys in one day.

Self-service electric scooters and scooters

Cityscoot has 4,000 electric scooters in Paris and in around fifteen municipalities in the outer suburbs. Until January 31, the first 45 minutes are offered to new registrants. Namely, the road safety certificate or driving license are compulsory.

As for self-service electric scooters available in Paris, there too, promotions are continuing at the start of the year. At Lime, the reduction is 10% on each trip made during the social movement, up to February 5. Voi offers 5 euros of credit and unlocking costs during peak hours for the duration of the strike. Circ goes further and promises -50% on its races until April 5.

Our map for walkers

For Parisians or Ile-de-France residents ready to leave their car at the gates of the capital to finish their journey on foot, we have calculated the journey times (map below) between many places in Paris. It will take you 30 minutes to connect the Place de l'Étoile to the Eiffel Tower, 41 minutes between Gare du Nord and Notre-Dame or 50 minutes between La Villette and Porte de Bagnolet.

Share a taxi and book your VTC

The prices of hybrid bikes, taken by storm since the start of the strike, soar during peak hours, their price being calculated according to supply and demand. Our advice: book your race well in advance, preferably during off-peak hours, or take advantage of the special offers currently offered to new users (at Heetch and Kapten) and in partnership with the RATP, as is the case with Marcel (10% reduction on your next trips).

The prices of Parisian taxis, regulated, depend on the distance traveled and the time spent. So watch out for traffic jams! Also note: apps, like TaxyMatch, group customers who are going in the same direction, to share the costs.
