CDU chief Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has not completely ruled out a reshuffle. When she arrived at the closed conference of the CSU regional group in the Upper Bavarian monastery in Seeon, she said that a corresponding advance by CSU boss Markus Söder was "a possibility". The Union had to go into the election campaign with a future program that could be credibly represented by the relevant people.
Literally, she said of Söder's request: "This is one possibility that Markus Söder brought into play." This will be discussed in the coming months. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), on the other hand, reacted extremely cautiously to the Söder push for a cabinet reshuffle.
Personnel debate in the Union
Söder's move prompted a personal debate in the Union just before the CSU Bundestag's closed session. He spoke in favor of a rejuvenation of the cabinet and sees a lot of catching up to do, especially when it comes to innovation, science and economy. This would affect the CDU ministries of Anja Karliczek (science and research) and Peter Altmaier (economics).
Kramp-Karrenbauer now said: "Markus Söder has now spoken of a cabinet reshuffle. I'm talking about a future team for the future, still leaving open what that might look like." With Söder she was very clear about her goal, "programmatically new, and also with the corresponding new faces to match."
