Swedish furniture giant IKEA will pay $ 46 million in compensation to the parents of an American child who was strangled to death under a chest of drawers that fell on him in 2017. The 32-pound piece of furniture was returned from stores a year earlier due to concerns about its safety following three more child deaths. This is the largest compensation settlement in a child death case in United States history.
"While no settlement can change the tragic events that brought us here, for the family and everyone involved, we are pleased that this lawsuit is over in the resolution," a company spokeswoman said. "We are still committed to working on the issue of home safety, which is paramount."
Joseph Dodek's parents, two years old at the time of his death, said they were "devastated" by the loss of their son. "We never thought that a 2-year-old could make a 76-cm dresser fall on him and choke him," said parents Jolene and Craig. Him, "We don't want this to happen to another family." They promised to donate $ 1 million from the settlement amount to organizations working to protect children from dangerous objects.
In 2016, the company returned millions of identical sample dressers in North America due to safety concerns. It was the biggest return in IKEA history.
