Likud against Knesset Speaker: Witness against Netanyahu; Mandelblit: No material evidence

Likud on Thursday attacked Knesset Speaker Eyal Yanun, because he is included in the list of prosecution witnesses in Netanyahu's files. On the other hand, Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit clarified that Yinon is on the witness list in Netanyahu's files for procedural reasons, and that "this is not material evidence of the cases."

Likud officials said that "after it turned out that Eyal Yanun's spouse was one of the indictments against the Prime Minister, it now becomes clear that the Knesset Speaker is a witness in the Netanyahu case." The party's statement states that "Eyal Yanun and his partner are in serious conflict that requires them to immediately disqualify themselves from dealing with Prime Minister Netanyahu's affairs."

The Likud added that they demand immediate answers from Eyal Yanon and Amit Merari: "Do you really expect the public to believe that you have never talked about Netanyahu's files, as the Knesset declared to the Knesset?"

Justice Mandelblit clarified on Likud's accusation that "Knesset Attorney General Ilan Yanun's name is included in the list of prosecution witnesses in the prime minister's case in light of the fact that a memorandum of record regarding a Knesset work routine was held with him." Mendelblit added, "Of course, this is not a substantial testimony to the cases, and it was not in any way to prevent the involvement of Attorney Amit Merari in any way."

The Yinon Knesset ruled this week that there is no impediment to establish the Knesset committee to discuss Netanyahu's immunity already during this period, although no new government has been formed and no Knesset committees have been established for regular work. Yinon claimed that this was not a legal impediment, partly because of the majority in the Knesset. This statement drew great criticism, especially in the Likud, where strong allegations of a serious conflict of interest were raised in the Yinon decision due to the fact that his spouse, Adv. Amit Merari, who serves as deputy to the Judiciary, was involved in formulating the indictments against Netanyahu.

Yanun rejected this criticism, claiming that he did not initially intend to engage in substantive issues of Netanyahu's immunity or MK Haim Katz from the Likud, but only in the procedure of establishing a Knesset committee of which there is no concern for conflict of interest. Yinon responded yesterday to criticism from Likud members, and today responded MK MK Mickey Zohar again from the Likud. Zohar wrote to him in another letter that his claim "to the conflict of interest has become even more clear in recent days, you acted in contravention of the Basic Law and completely ignored the fact that the discussion of the PM's request for immunity was decided in advance and is expected to exist solely for political purposes. It's not too late to fix the terrible injustice. "
