A student went armed to the Cervantes de Coahuila School and killed a teacher. There are six injured; Five students and a teacher.

Two people have died and several have been injured in a shooting at a school in Torreón, in the Mexican state of Coahuila, as reported by the state government.

Authorities said a student went armed to Cervantes College with the intention of hurting a teacher. In addition to the two dead, identified as José Ángel Ramos and María Medina, there are six wounded, two of them seriously. Five of the injured are students and the fifth is a teacher, authorities said.

"Unfortunately, a teacher and the child who shot the teacher died," Coahuilense governor Miguel Angel Riquelme told a news conference.

The governor said the 11-year-old aggressor and sixth grade student was influenced by a video game called Natural Selection. Riquelme added that the child's family environment was being reviewed.

The student would have asked to leave the classroom to go to the bathroom shortly after 8:20. The teacher went looking for him, because he had not returned 15 minutes later. The boy then left the toilet with two weapons and was in the hall where the shooting happened, Riquelme explained.

Maurilio Ochoa, delegate of the state prosecutor's office, added to the media that the family of the alleged aggressor claims not to know where he got the weapons.

A rare aggression

Torreón is the largest city in Coahuila, with a population of more than 600,000 people, and there have been concentrated in recent years almost half of the state’s wrongful killings.

Coahuila is the places in Mexico where violence has decreased the most in recent years, although towards the end of 2019 there was a rebound in aggressions, such as a shooting that left 23 dead, attributed to the growing presence of the Northeast Cartel.

School shootings are very rare in Mexico, unlike in the United States; most often when there are shots in a Mexican school, it is due to crossfire from narco clashes.

One of the most famous cases of a school shooting happened three years ago in Monterrey, Nuevo León, when a teenager shot at his classmates in the North American College of the Northeast. A teacher died.

Before the shooting in Monterrey, the most recent armed school aggression had been in 2014 in the State of Mexico; a high school student shot another with whom he had a dispute.
