(CNN Spanish) - El Salvador President Nayib Bukele reported on Thursday what he called the escape of the former president of the Legislative Assembly, Sigfrido Reyes. Bukele said that apparently someone alerted him to the arrest warrant against him for assuming him responsible for money laundering and illicit enrichment.

According to the Salvadoran president, Reyes traveled to Guatemala last November, then to Mexico and is now being investigated to confirm his presence in France or Russia.

Sigfrido Reyes' wife, Susi Melba Rodríguez, was arrested this Thursday at her home in the Satélite neighborhood in San Salvador. At the time of being transferred in a National Civil Police patrol, he told reporters that he pleads not guilty of the accusation against him.

Reyes, who was a deputy of the Legislative Assembly since 2006 and president between 2011 and 2015, faces with his wife an investigation for alleged money laundering and illicit enrichment.

In July 2019, the Supreme Court of Justice sent his case to trial because he had not justified his estate income for just over $ 373,000.

President Bukele revealed that they have already captured four more people who operated together in what he called "a band."

For his part, Sigfrido Reyes has defended himself through social networks: “It was some magistrates of the CSJ, at the service of obscure and repudiable interests, and without any technical-financial or legal support, who twisted arbitrarily, to cause a serious damage to my person, the conclusions of Probity and the resolution that exonerated me ”.
