(CNN) - The United States is increasingly convinced that Iran mistakenly shot down the Ukrainian plane, according to several US officials. CNN is told that this could be a war fog incident, and Iran may have believed it was under attack.

December 27: A missile attack believed to be related to a group of Shiite militias, backed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, killed an American civilian contractor and wounded several US and Iraqi military personnel at a nearby base from Kirkuk, Iraq.

Friday: Iran's chief general, Qasem Soleimani, died in an air raid in Iraq, which was ordered by President Donald Trump. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the airstrikes interrupted an "imminent attack" in the region that put the lives of Americans at risk. After the attack, the United States announced that it would deploy thousands of additional troops in the Middle East.

Thursday: The House of Representatives approved the resolution of the War Powers of Iran with a vote of 224 to 194. The resolution aims to restrict the president's ability to use military actions against Iran without the approval of Congress. During a press conference, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canadian officials have intelligence from their own sources and Canadian allies showing that Ukrainian International Airlines flight 752 was shot down by an Iranian land-air missile .
