Trump asks the leaders of Iran not to "kill" the Protestants against him and warns: "The United States looks"

The country in the Middle East experienced demonstrations by groups of people critical of the authorities for taking time to recognize that they shot down a Ukrainian civil aircraft "by mistake"

The president, Donald Trump, tweeted this Sunday: “To the leaders of Iran: DO NOT KILL YOUR PROTESTANTS. Thousands have already been killed or imprisoned by you, and the world is watching. More importantly, the United States is watching. Activate the Internet again and let journalists move freely! ”

The message apparently refers to protests against the Iranian government that were unleashed on Saturday after Tehran admitted that it shot down "by mistake" a few days earlier a Ukrainian civilian plane with 176 people on board. The event came a few hours after Iran launched a rocket attack against Iraqi bases used by the United States.

That military operation and that plane crash, in which there were no survivors and whose circumstances still arouse questions, occurred after Washington killed the powerful Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in a drone attack, while he was in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq . His death aroused the anger of thousands of people in Iran and caused an escalation of tension between the United States and this Middle Eastern country.

Tehran did not immediately admit that it shot down the Ukrainian plane, manufactured by the American company Boeing, but first pointed to a technical failure. He only did so after Western leaders like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared that demolition was a plausible option. 57 of the passengers killed in the accident were Canadians.

Hundreds of Iranians expressed in the streets their anger at the demolition of the plane and the misleading explanations of senior officials following the tragedy. The Associated Press reports. They are also mourning the dead, among which there were a large number of young people with promising futures studying abroad.

A group of protesters demanded that the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, resign after this situation occurred.

The only woman to win an Olympic medal for Iran was one of the people who expressed criticism against the country's rulers. In a post on Instagram, he launched a scathing attack on the "hypocrisy" of the Iranian administration and seemed to imply that he had left the country permanently, although it is not clear when.

British Ambassador to Tehran, Rob Macaire, was briefly arrested for having participated "in an illegal demonstration," Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister said Sunday, adding that the diplomat was released as soon as he was identified, about 15 minutes later.

Protests in the past

Trump, who has already expressed his support for anti-government protests in Iran at other times, posted a message in Persian on Saturday, a language spoken in Iran: “For the brave and suffering Iranian people: I have been with you since the beginning of my presidency and my government will continue to be with you. We are closely following their protests. His courage is inspiring. ”

He also asked in another tweet that the authorities leave NGOs to monitor the situation on the ground and leave free access to the Internet, and claimed that "there can be no other massacres of peaceful Protestants."

Iranians took to the streets in November after the government raised gas prices. There were large demonstrations in several cities. The government closed Internet access for days, making it difficult to measure the magnitude of the protests and subsequent repression. Amnesty International said later that more than 300 people were killed .

Iran's authorities are expecting more protests this Sunday, and have deployed a comprehensive security device in Tehran, according to AP .

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said in an interview on the CBS network that the Trump administration does not foresee more Iranian military attacks in retaliation for the death of Soleimani.
